This is a good recounting of the pivotal role Samuel Adams played in the American Revolution。 the author makes a strong case that without his influence and persistence from 1760 through 1775 there may have been no revolution or independence。 She also shows the sadness of his later life in which he had a hard time fitting his fiery personality into the established government。 in addition， the book provides insight into the lives of other more minor Founding Fathers and the relationships between t This is a good recounting of the pivotal role Samuel Adams played in the American Revolution。 the author makes a strong case that without his influence and persistence from 1760 through 1775 there may have been no revolution or independence。 She also shows the sadness of his later life in which he had a hard time fitting his fiery personality into the established government。 in addition， the book provides insight into the lives of other more minor Founding Fathers and the relationships between them。My one caveat is that the author often turns her sentences into convoluted monstrosities that leave you re-reading and parsing them to find out what in the world she was trying to say。 This is not good writing， but I guess when you have won a Pulitzer Prize it is hard for an editor to point that out。 。。。more

My head is simply spinning from all the knowledge that I absolutely cannot remember from junior high and high school regarding the revolutionary war that was just poured back into my brain， Samuel Adams in particular。 If you have any interest in this war， and I kind of do because it’s not World War II which I am heartily sick of， I would highly recommend this well researched tome。

I loved her Cleopatra bio and was underwhelmed by The Witches so I went into this one optimistic but skeptical。 It was so good！ I learned so much about MA pre war and a different perspective on the players in the revolution。 Highly recommend this book。

While I learned a lot of interesting facts about Samuel Adams， the writing was all over the place and sometimes hard to understand。 This book would have benefited from a strong editor to bring more structure to sentences - and sometimes entire paragraphs - that were difficult to follow。

I listened to the audio version。 I had trouble staying focused as it just didn’t grab my attention and it jumped around and read like a poorly organized textbook rather than the lively， colorful depiction of Samual Adams that I was hoping for。
