Summary

Thomas Jefferson asserted that if there was any leader of the Revolution, “Samuel Adams was the man。” With high-minded ideals and bare-knuckle tactics, Adams led what could be called the greatest campaign of civil resistance in American history。

Stacy Schiff returns Adams to his seat of glory, introducing us to the shrewd and eloquent man who supplied the moral backbone of the American Revolution。 A singular figure at a singular moment, Adams amplified the Boston Massacre。 He helped to mastermind the Boston Tea Party。 He employed every tool available to rally a town, a colony, and eventually a band of colonies behind him, creating the cause that created a country。 For his efforts he became the most wanted man in America: When Paul Revere rode to Lexington in 1775, it was to warn Samuel Adams that he was about to be arrested for treason。

In The Revolutionary: Samuel Adams, Schiff brings her masterful skills to Adams’s improbable life, illuminating his transformation from aimless son of a well-off family to tireless, beguiling radical who mobilized the colonies。 Arresting, original, and deliriously dramatic, this is a long-overdue chapter in the history of our nation。

This is a good recounting of the pivotal role Samuel Adams played in the American Revolution。 the author makes a strong case that without his influence and persistence from 1760 through 1775 there may have been no revolution or independence。 She also shows the sadness of his later life in which he had a hard time fitting his fiery personality into the established government。 in addition, the book provides insight into the lives of other more minor Founding Fathers and the relationships between t This is a good recounting of the pivotal role Samuel Adams played in the American Revolution。 the author makes a strong case that without his influence and persistence from 1760 through 1775 there may have been no revolution or independence。 She also shows the sadness of his later life in which he had a hard time fitting his fiery personality into the established government。 in addition, the book provides insight into the lives of other more minor Founding Fathers and the relationships between them。My one caveat is that the author often turns her sentences into convoluted monstrosities that leave you re-reading and parsing them to find out what in the world she was trying to say。 This is not good writing, but I guess when you have won a Pulitzer Prize it is hard for an editor to point that out。 。。。more

Not as engaging as I had hoped, but an interesting read about a key revolutionary figure I knew very little about。

Reads as just a list of events about Sam Adams -- no sense of the person, his motivations, even how he interacted with his contemporaries, or even his big ideas。 The impression given is that he was a master at manipulating the media (including staging crimes and false reports) to bring about the break with England for reasons that aren't specified。 Perhaps just the love of power? My head is simply spinning from all the knowledge that I absolutely cannot remember from junior high and high school regarding the revolutionary war that was just poured back into my brain, Samuel Adams in particular。 If you have any interest in this war, and I kind of do because it’s not World War II which I am heartily sick of, I would highly recommend this well researched tome。

I loved her Cleopatra bio and was underwhelmed by The Witches so I went into this one optimistic but skeptical。 It was so good! I learned so much about MA pre war and a different perspective on the players in the revolution。 Highly recommend this book。

I was introduced to Samual Adams by Saul Alinsky。 Alinsky was a great admirer of this prime mover of the American Revolution, and so am I。Schiff does an excellent job of filling in the many blanks in Adam's life。 Unlike his cousin, John, Samuel had no particular interest in enhancing his place in history。 He was a prolific writer/propagandist who destroyed most of his papers to keep them out of enemy hands。 The author was thrown back on secondary sources and did an excellent job of fleshing out I was introduced to Samual Adams by Saul Alinsky。 Alinsky was a great admirer of this prime mover of the American Revolution, and so am I。Schiff does an excellent job of filling in the many blanks in Adam's life。 Unlike his cousin, John, Samuel had no particular interest in enhancing his place in history。 He was a prolific writer/propagandist who destroyed most of his papers to keep them out of enemy hands。 The author was thrown back on secondary sources and did an excellent job of fleshing out his life and work。 。。。more

While I learned a lot of interesting facts about Samuel Adams, the writing was all over the place and sometimes hard to understand。 This book would have benefited from a strong editor to bring more structure to sentences - and sometimes entire paragraphs - that were difficult to follow。

Having read Cleopatra and The Witches, I'd be hard-pressed to name a biographer or historian better at fleshing out lives and their contexts in the absence of full documentation than Stacy Schiff。 Here, the account is a bit different in cause and effect。 The evidence is thin because Adams wanted it to be so。 The special challenge Schiff faces here is conjuring the conjuror, the consummate behind-the-scenes manipulator whose goal was to efface himself as an actor in the public events he was stagi Having read Cleopatra and The Witches, I'd be hard-pressed to name a biographer or historian better at fleshing out lives and their contexts in the absence of full documentation than Stacy Schiff。 Here, the account is a bit different in cause and effect。 The evidence is thin because Adams wanted it to be so。 The special challenge Schiff faces here is conjuring the conjuror, the consummate behind-the-scenes manipulator whose goal was to efface himself as an actor in the public events he was staging。 Contributing to a field of accounts that are essentially brilliant distillations of mountains of documentation (I am thinking especially of Chernow's great biographies), Schiff faces an equal but opposite challenge。 Adams was the founding father who spurned the spotlight, who did his best work being the scenes, published everything under pseudonyms meant to confer anonymity, burned his letters, etc。 Filling in the full picture here requires some authorial license, making a virtue of necessity and implying that the subject is too shifty (and crafty) to pin down when the evidence one way or another is simply missing。 For some crucial events Adams' role or even presence is speculative, as if it were felt rather than admitted or witnessed。 Schiff is better at the analysis of his role over time and overall。 The title is pointed: Adams was an agitator, not a builder; a disruptor more than a politician。 To the end he had hoped more for a loose federation of more or less independent states than a union (and he may, in the long run, be getting his wish)。 He was less a founding father than a declarer of the independence that was the crucial first step in founding a new nation。 。。。more

This was good, but the writing was not great。 The author would constantly use the same odd descriptions over and over, though not in the historical sense that they would fit。 I enjoyed learning about S。 Adams。 The book left much to be desired, however。

Early hagiography settles down into a move even-handed view of this difficult figure。 Demonstrates clearly that political shenanigans, manipulation, and mob motivation are not unique to today。
